The 20th Annual Women of Dumfries and Galloway Lunch

Life and Wines – Jilly Goolden’s surprising wine journey on (and off) TV
Jilly Goolden is one of the best know wine personalities and experts in the UK.
She is almost single handedly responsible for the way wine is now described all over the world. On BBC TV’s iconic Food and Drink programme, which launched her wine career in the eighties, she reached audiences of up to 8 million viewers each week over the course of two decades, in the UK and internationally.
Unconventionally, she abandoned traditional ‘wine speak’ as being out of touch with her huge and diverse audience. Instead she described wines in the much more vivid, accessible way that has not only become her trademark but has also been adopted all over the world: “a whiff of hot buttered toast” being much more evocative than “pedigree and finesse.”
As a journalist, she has written about wine for virtually every national newspaper and magazine in the UK most recently contributing articles on wine for The Daily Mail and The Sun. She has presented primetime television programmes for both the BBC and ITV on a wide range of subjects, as well as wine, including antiques (BBC 1’s The Great Antiques Hunt), travel (BBC 1’s Holiday Programme and You Call the Shots) and food (ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish). She has also taken part in her fair share of celebrity reality shows such as I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here and Celebrity Wife Swap.
