The Value of Evidence

We are delighted to welcome back Professor Dame Anne Glover to deliver her lecture, which was postponed from March. We invite you to join us for the first of the Crichton Conversation Webinars.

In a world where we are commonly faced with dramatically different views of the world and unchallenged fake news, we need to be able to have confidence in trusted sources of evidence. Evidence can be generated from lots of different sources but much of it comes from the knowledge generated by research. This Conversation will explore what value such evidence might have for society and when it should and shouldn’t be used to develop government policies.

Anne Glover is a molecular biologist who has studied how we respond to stress at the molecular level. She was the first Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission (2012-2015). Prior to that, she was the first Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland (2006-2011). She has been an effective and well respected ambassador for European science. She is a trustee of many charities and has a particular interest in how knowledge can be used to transform lives in Africa. She is President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and took up office in April 2018. She is currently Special Adviser to the Principal at University of Strathclyde.

This is a virtual event. The webinar will commence promptly at 7:30pm on Tuesday 1st December. Pre-booking is essential.
